i finally put my foot down and i’m so happy!!
hi! sorry in advanced for the lengthy post. i’m a (almost) 20y/o trans guy, i’ve identified as trans for about 8 years now.
growing up, my parents were definitely transphobic. any conversation happening around trans people was heinous and hateful. i tried talking to my mom about my gender identity when i was 13, and to this day, i regret that conversation. lots of repression and mental recession came from what she said. because of that, i never said anything to my dad.
i was accidentally outed to my mom twice after i turned 18. both times, the confrontation was ugly and there was no progress in her acceptance. i still said nothing to my dad and stayed (almost) completely in the closet, because her approval mattered to me and i didn’t have it.
having lead me to believe that our relationship would be over if i came out, i moved across the country to live with my boyfriend. i started living my life as a man and 8 months ago i started testosterone. i stay in touch with my parents and we’ve even visited for the holidays, but i kept them in the dark when it came to my transition.
after months of careful planning and mental preparation, i gave my mom a call yesterday and told her i’m an adult and this is who i am. it’s not changing, it’s not going away, and i’m not hiding it anymore. she’s taking it pretty hard but said she’s going to try. it was a rough talk.
then i called my dad. i was nearly shitting myself when i finally spit it out, and he just said “oh okay, great!” and said the only thing that matters is my happiness and that they’ll follow my lead on this because it’s my life.
i swear i have whiplash from how intensely i prepared for the worst, and how perfectly it ended up going.
so now i have my dad to help support me when talking to my mom, and honestly i just couldn’t be happier. it’s absolutely surreal after 8 years of feeling like i’m my family’s biggest disappointment.
cheers to happiness and authenticity!!🍾
