Question about sub woofers

So I just picked up a Velodyne MiniVee that someone was giving away for free in my neighborhood. From what I gather, it's an 8" sub woofer made primarily for home listening, and not necessarily for production purposes. I was wondering if this would work for music production, as I don't have a sub or monitors that go very low in the frequency spectrum. For context, I make techno and other bass focused music.
