KOTOR or KOTOR 2?

Both Games

They are both on sale on the Microsoft Store, but I don't know which one I should buy. I never played neither of them, so it would be a totally new experience for me. Can anyone give me an advice? Also, is the combat only turn based?

Play KOTOR first and avoid Google, Youtube, and Wookiepedia or else the plot will be spoiled.

How much are they? Normally you're putting down $10 - $20 in total for both games.

Combat is turn based, but plays out in real time so it doesn't feel too slow going.

Good luck and have fun.

We also have spoiler-free start guides for the original and the sequel which might be of some help to you in starting off on the right foot with them.

Play Kotor first for many reasons. First Kotor 2 spoils Kotor 1 at points, even as early as when the game starts.

Second, mechanics aren't as refined in the first game, so if you start with the second, the mechanics of the first game may be harder to adjust to (for example having 2 weapon sets to switch between, whereas Kotor 1 you only have one weapon set and have to use the equip screen to switch weapons every time.

Third, certain side characters in Kotor 2 have origins in Kotor 1

Fourth: Kotor 2 requires some modding for the full experience, and if you're not really that invested in the Kotor series, it may just be a waste of time to you. Ultimately, it's playable without the restored content, but playing Kotor 2 as it was released is missing some details.

Fifth: I've been playing Kotor since I was knee high to a grasshopper, everything I've mentioned until now comes from experience. This last one is subjective. Kotor 1 is the quintessential Star Wars role playing game experience. Even your final companions, chain of events, and ending scenes can change drastically depending on your actions and how you choose to play. Ignore canon, ignore asking which class to choose or how to talk to your companions or even how to approach dialogue, as you can drastically change your game based on your actions. Play your first game how you would actually choose those actions. The reason I say this is subjective is because plenty of people have different ideas of how to play computer rpg's, but honestly, my take is that your first Kotor experience should be how you yourself would handle the life you're thrown into, not how canon sees it.

Get both if it's in your budget, then play KOTOR 1 first.

They seem to go on sale for $2.49 each every so often.

Absolutely play the first game first, then play its sequel. While the story in each game is self-contained, there is a lot of conversation about things/people/places that happened before, during, and after the events of the first game. The second game has gameplay improvements and more slightly more nuanced writing/themes, that I think would make it difficult to immerse yourself in the first game after experiencing (which you should absolutely do, as I personally prefer the story of the first game to that of the second).

Combat is technically turn-based, but the turns only stop if you manually pause the game or set the game to automatically pause after each round. Characters will continue fighting without any input, so it's very fluid and basically doesn't feel like you're playing a turn-based game, you just don't have to constantly be moving, mashing buttons, or relying on reflexes in combat.

First game first. Second game second. Story is important for both games. The battle system is a little like an active battle turn based system with the ability to queue up moves. It's weird but if you find the adjustment easy then purchase the second one. Both are amazing games

They're both on GOG for like £3 each if you have a pc?

The combat is improved in the second one but the story is phenomenal in the first one. If you don't know what happens don't look it up.

Run 1 first, then make sure to get the restored content mod and play 2, which happens to be my favorite Star Wars media ever.

you start with the first game. Game wise second game had some improvements but story wise you need to start from the first one.

KOTOR is much more of a Star Wars type experience. Flashy fun, not too much thinking.

KOTOR II is a very deep and thoughtful game, much darker and deconstructs Star Wars in some interesting ways. You need to play this multiple times, male/female both light and dark to get the full story.
