J Zhen
4 for $4.95
Filling: 6/10
Wrapper: 3.5/10
Sauce: 7.5/10
Value: 4/5
Overall: 21/35
Filling: While I have no issues with this filling, it wasn’t fantastic. It was pretty middle of the road. None of the flavors were very strong. There was a light garlic flavor, and I really enjoyed the creaminess of the texture, but overall it was pretty bland. I thought the salt level was spot on though which gives it a few bonus points. The filling was also elevated by the sauce, but on its own, it wasn't a standout.
Wrapper: The wrapper was the weak point of this rangoon. The texture was not very enjoyable to me. It had an almost cardboard texture on the edges that I found pretty unappetizing. I often find that rangoon are too oily, but these weren’t oily enough. They were pretty chewy as well which I didn’t like. I prefer a crispy rangoon and these missed the mark on the mouth feel. They were well cooked though, which I appreciated.
Sauce: I really liked the sauce. I was for sure my favorite part of the ‘goon. It was very light and had a good vinegar flavored base that I found really refreshing. It was the classic sweet and sour sauce flavor, but the vinegar notes made it very unique. An excellent bright sauce that elevated the crab rangoon as a whole.
Value: Metrics can be found in my data sheet. At $1.23 each, these get a 4.
Overall: Overall, I wasn’t very impressed with these rangoon. I think they’re a fine option if you’re in a pinch, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for them. The filling was pretty bland, the sauce very tasty. If brought together with a really excellent wonton, I think these would be high quality rangoon, but the wonton was a disappointment. It was chewy and the texture was not what I look for in a top tier ‘goon. The price point is solid though, but overall, not my favorite.
