I dont know how to make friends anymore?
I know coming to reddit isnt really something most people would advise but... I feel stuck.
I (26f) got out of the military a year ago, and I've found it.... really hard to make friends. I'm a pretty social person, I like people and I enjoy talking to people. The only problem is, basically all the friends I've made in the past 8 years were/are military, and it was really easy to make friends due to the togetherness of embrace the suck and constantly working together much. Also having a lot of things in common, especially sense of humor wise, it was really easy for me to make friends.
Initally when I got out I moved in with my bf (24m) to where he grew up, but it's too far to just, go and hang out with my friends whenever. So I've tried making friends in that area. But... it's so different? I've tried making friends with like, his family/the girls in that area/the gf's of his friends group and it's... so hard. I feel like I'm too brash, like I'm too different? And they dont seem to really want to be my friend? (they dont really ask me to hang out or expressed a desire to be my friend)
I'm older than them, I have a dark sense of humor, I say weird shit that in the military would be funny, I like video games and dungeons and dragons and nerdy shit.... and I dont want to say that no one in that area likes that stuff, but it's a small town. I'm just... different. The culture is very different than what I'm used to, I guess.
Then I took up a job, hoping that I could make friends, and after I was hired I realized it was only people who were like....already 10 years older than me.
Then I got let go from that job, we moved to a different area like 30 min away, and if I didnt feel like I was at step 1 already, I'd say I was back at step 1.
I dont really drink, and I know bars are a great place to meet people but I dont want to go to a bar alone to make friends (my bf is.... very introverted. He doesnt care/want to make new friends, and he doesnt do well in bigger social settings due to his anxiety, and I'd rather not force him.)
I hope I can get a job here that wont have 40+ year olds as its main work force, but my main skill set is... being a mechanic. So I'm nervous what happened before will happen again if I keep applying for mechanic heavy jobs. But that's really the only thing I know how to do.... I'm applying at other places, but then it comes down to do I want a shitty paying job and maybe I'll make some friends out of it, or go for the better job and maybe end up having the same situation as before.
I dont know. Maybe I'm just dumb? Am I missing something here? I just feel really lonely. I just want to be able to go to a friends house and hang out, go and do fun stuff with. Play dungeons and dragons or go hiking or go out to eat or whatever.
I'm thinking about maybe volunteering at a animal shelter, but the thought of meeting new people again and kind of being an outcast (again) is terrifying. I had a bit of social anxiety meeting new people before but it would normall pass pretty easy, but the last time I went to a little group hangout with my bf and his friend group I just couldnt help but keep thinking of how weird and awkward I was and how I was probably talking to much or too loud or if what I was saying was stupid or not.
Has anyone else felt like this? Do you guys know of good ways to make friends with people in a new place? Especially being a little older? (I know I'm not that old, but I'm not really in my "prime" anymore. At least, I dont feel like I am.)
*also, pls dont come after my bf for not wanting to make friends or anything like that. he's very supportive of me and half the time we even go to these things is because he knows I'm trying to make friends and hes trying to help. It's just. hard. idk whats wrong with me
