Rack and Pinion

Took my 2006 V8 Sport in to get the timing belt and water pump changed, the shop noticed my rack and pinion was leaking a little bit. They want to charge me $1200(USD) to replace it, I was wondering has anyone done it themselves and if so was it difficult or can I just wait a month or two to just pay someone to do it?
