Transition from WordPress

Question

I have a client who I have worked with for many years who has simply started to outgrow WordPress. I rebuilt their site a few years back and cut down most of the plugins they had but I can feel it growing to the same levels again because business is good. They have found great success and their roadmap over the next few years is going to push the number of plugins to a higher level. I have developed custom plugins for certain niche needs. However, after discussing with them we agreed planning a switch is a good idea.

The plan is to build this out over the next year or two. My goal right now is to try and narrow down what to use for the site in terms of the technology stack. I am a PHP developer so my natural first choice is Laravel. However, I am not married to anything right now so I figured I would ask and get opinions. I know this can be very subjective so for the sake of time, I will list out a few high-level requirements. The site at a base level isn't very complicated the most complex aspects are the user and e-commerce aspects. Anyway, list of what will be needed:

  • Great user management
    • Membership purchasing
    • Membership billing
    • Dashboard access for members
  • Learning Management System like Udemy for example
  • Backend admin dashboard for content management of courses, webinars, products (in addition to courses)
    • Blog management will likely still be routed through WordPress but open to suggestions on this.

Outside of this, it is really just static content with the exception of a few directories that get updated with links to resources. I am open to suggestions for both the front end and back end. Really just need it to scale well. The biggest aspect with WordPress is just so many plugins being put together to make everything work. It just creates a ton of overlap and bloat that slows down the site even with using caching and a CDN. The client and I would prefer to put more time in upfront to make things easier and scalable down the line. Anyway, I appreciate it if you made it this far and hope to hear some great suggestions.
