I had a close call with road debris today.

I didn't even see this rag but I definitely felt it when is got sucked into my front and rear sprocket and momentarily locked up my rear wheel. Fortunately, I was able to maintain control and pull over safely.

I'm really glad that I have a center stand, because I'm not sure if I would have been able to remove the fabric without lifting the rear wheel, as it was wound so tightly around the hub that I needed to spin the wheel backwards in order to unwind the fabric.

As a relatively new rider - on my second season and only bought this bike two weeks ago - this was my first road incident. My takeaways are to:

  • Pay higher attention to what is on the road
  • always carry a blade
  • always have a center stand
  • be careful around the chain when it is in motion

The last point is because my glove got snagged on the chain while I was working on spinning the fabric free. It was a mini lesson in how easily the chain and sprocket can mess your day up if you're not mindful of them while working in that area of the bike.

Thanks for reading; safe riding.
