If Johnny Depp wins, where does the $50 mil come from?

Hey all, I’ve always been curious about this. When a party sues another, like Johnny Depp suing Amber Heard for $50 million, where does this money come from if he wins? Does Heard have to pay some of it, the company that published the story, or a combination of both? Further, how do they determine the amount they want to sue for? Why not $75 million for example?

Sorry if it’s a loaded question, but it’s one I’ve always been curious about.
