What books would you recommend to an adult who is just getting into fiction?

A friend of mine has never really read for entertainment, but would like to start. He knows how much I love books so asked me for recommendations. He mostly reads science and philosophy, so I’m thinking Kafka or Camus, but I’d like to find something that’s a departure from his norm but would still hold interest. Any suggestions much appreciated!
