Desktop launcher for application menu?

I'm setting up a TV media center computer, and using the MATE panel isn't practical for it. I'd like to still be able to access the application menu GUI, but I want to use a desktop launcher that won't get in the way of windows. Is there a way to launch the applications menu from a desktop launcher?
