Avocado plant - please help

I have had an avocado pit growing for around 9 months now. I love plants but are never to sure how to upkeep them to make them grow the best they can. I was really proud that the avocado pit started growing after a while, but I was to scared to cut the top off like some people recommend. I was just wondering if the stalk will branch out on its own or if I will have to cut it at some point. My other question was if I ever have to transfer it to dirt. Right now it’s still in a glass milk container with water and seems to be growing fine. I’m worried if I move it to dirt it will stop growing or I’ll forget to water it and it will die. Does anyone have any tips? I keep my plant inside right in front of the window and it seems to grow well there.
