So...What's the Idea?

Maybe I'm just an actual moron, but I don't see why people call this game dark. Really it just tries WAY too hard. Like is an edgy quote every level and an ending about shooting up an elementary school REALLY a commentary on anything? Is it supposed to be? The reviews on steam sure touted it that way and ig I just want some clarification.
