Is this something that I should report? Who should I report it to?

Hi. I’m a 23 y/o female in the US who went to my university health center 3 times over the course of the last month for an “unknown” illness that turned out to be mono.

My first visit was mid-April when I went in for swollen glands in my neck, a pressurized feeling in my ears and a severe migraine. I have a migraine disorder, but this one was different and pushed me to go in to see them. I explained my symptoms and first off, I was told by the nurse that I was experiencing a headache and not a migraine. I’m used to this dialogue from people who don’t know my medical history so I just brushed it off and let it go. The PA came in and looked into my ears, didn’t really see anything wrong but gave me a bottle of amoxicillin anyways. I found this odd and went home, called my mom and explained everything. I ended up not taking it.

Easter Sunday came around and I was visiting my boyfriend when I started having stomach upset. This lasted for 5 days.

This past Sunday, my tonsils became swollen. I went to the university health center again on Monday (4/25). I didn’t have a fever at the time of my appointment. The PA just looked at my tonsils and told me to take the amoxicillin that I didn’t take from earlier in the month. I said okay, and went home thinking it was weird that my throat wasn’t swabbed to determine if it was a bacterial or viral infection. I have never had swollen tonsils before but I recalled my friends in the past getting swabbed whenever this happened.

Monday night I developed a fever that lasted until Friday night. It was low grade, nothing crazy. I took the amoxicillin and was taking Advil for the pain. My tonsils decreased in size by Saturday morning. They’re still a bit swollen.

Yesterday, Monday 5/2, and on day 7 of the amoxicillin, I developed a rash. It started on my upper body and I rushed to the health center. My mom thought I may be having an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin. The PA came in and looked at my rash on my arms and said I was having an allergic reaction. She gave me a bottle of benedryl and a topical steroid (specifically two tubes, “because one tube won’t cover all of the areas you need”). I went home and applied the cream, took the benedryl and took a nap. I woke up feeling no better. Went to bed last night feeling no better, and the rash was spreading to the rest of my body at this point.

I called my parents to see what I should do, and the clear answer was to go to an urgent care and pay out of pocket for care (ins. doesn’t cover me in the area of my uni) because clearly something was wrong. So I went this morning.

The doctor immediately told me that I have mono based on the way my rash looked alone. She was appalled that the school didn’t test me for strep. She gave me a mono test that came back positive and I got more extensive blood work to determine if it’s EBV. She also was shocked that the PA at school couldn’t tell the difference between a mono rash and an amoxicillin allergy rash. And she was shocked about the tubes of ointment. I’m now on prednisone and my skin is already starting to clear up.

So… all of this has lead me to thinking about if this is something I should report to the university and the healthcare network that oversees the health center on my campus? It feels like all of this was grossly mishandled. Am I correct in thinking this? The way the doctor at urgent care reacted leads me to believe that i’m correct. I’m going to be reaching out to my PCP in the coming days to talk about this before my upcoming appt on 5/12. Just want some additional input.
