Minor physically assaulted and parents won’t report it to the cops (SC)
I (28f) have a family member (14 y/o female) who started dating a male who she thought was 17 y/o, last fall. They had sex and she told her mother. Fast forward to February this year, she found out his real age was 20 y/o. Once she found out his age, she told her mother and her response was “you can help who you fall in love with.” Shortly after finding out his real age, the two got into their first physical altercation where he choked her and left a bruise around her neck. Being 14 she neglected to tell anyone, anything other than they broke up.
Recently, he started to come back around and he ended up hitting her in the mouth, cutting her lip. She told her mother, she responds with “you deserve it,” and “it’s your fault.”
I am told about the second assault and after hearing how her mother is doing nothing, I drive 3 hours to SC to help support her in talking to her school resource officer. The sheriffs department takes her statement and fills out the Victim Information Sheet.
After I get home, I am told that they cannot press charges or move forward in anyway with out her mothers consent.
Is there anything that can be done in SC to help out in this situation?
