Moving to California. Can I bring a handgun that's not on the roster and still apply for CCW? Or should I purchase a weapon that's on the legal roster?

So basically, the title. If I purchase a gen 5 glock in my current state and bring it into California, can I still put it on the CCW application? Or do I need to purchase a gen 3 glock in the state of California in order to put it on the application? If I'm reading correctly, I can only carry what's on my application once (if) approved.
