How does Blazing Sunsteel work

What happens if the creature it is equipped to were to be dealt lethal damage? Does it still deal the damage to a target? And furthermore, I'm wondering if I can choose to deal that much damage to itself and keep looping that with something like Fiery Emancipation on the field to hit a player for an obsurd amount of damage
