Should I transfer internally?
I work for a major defense company. I was hired and given a certain amount of money to relocate, as well as a separate amount as a sign-on bonus. This company has numerous locations across the country. I would be happier transferring to a different role at a different location within this company; however, my offer letter states I would have to pay back my sign-on bonus if I do not stay with them for a year. Currently I am very far geographically from family and friends which is isolating, and the role I’m in isn’t my main career interest. Transferring would allow me to be closer to friends and family, in a role I’d prefer, but I’d (potentially) have to pay back the sign-on bonus.
I am wondering if anyone has experienced this sign-on bonus predicament before while trying to transfer within the same company, but to a different location? Also, wondering what people would recommend doing in my shoes? I see my two options as: (1) Transfer, but pay back a lot of money.
(2) Stay for 7 more months, but be unhappy.
I would appreciate any advice for people who have changed careers or transferred infernally in a company. Thank you!
