Can I work remotely in another country?

I'll be studying abroad soon and will not be able to work in the country I'm staying in while I'm there. I'm wondering, is it possible to have a remote position doing work in the US that I could do while in Europe? I know the time difference would be a challenge in and of itself, but I don't want to be totally without any source of income. Has anyone ever heard of this being done?
