Stuck and not sure what to do

Hi all, i am a new player that recently played skyrim (don't have the dlcs, only the base game).

I am at the point to escort esbern to riverwood and I'm just getting attacked at by the villagers. They keep saying I am a blood starved vampire or something like that.

Is there a way to stop this? Im just playing skyrim for the story and would really appreciate it if anybody could provide me any tips to progress. Thank you
