Not happy with average speed. Is it me or the bike?
After window shopping road bikes online for years, and about 2 years of riding a schwinn IC4 indoor bike 4 times per week, I finally decided to treat myself and go to my local bike shop to purchase a road bike. When I told the store owner what I was looking for and what my budget was ($1500) he told me that he didn’t have anything coming in for nearly 5 months. Unfortunately, where I live, there aren’t enough warm months to wait for 6 months before I would have to wait for the winter to come and go again before I could put it to use.
He directed my attention to a used 19 Specialized Sirrus Carbon, which he said was a fitness bike. It fit me perfectly and was barely broken in, and light as a feather. I felt like it had a lot more features than I would have found in similarly priced new road bike (1300), and was eager to get out and start logging miles, so I purchased it and picked it up the next day.
I have ridden it about 60 miles so far, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, but after finishing my ride and looking at the statistics my speed is 10-12 miles per hour. When I would ride my indoor bike, I would consistently ride at 18-20 mph, so I’ve become a bit discouraged seeing these low speed.
I’m wondering if this has more to do with my skill level or the type of bike I am riding. If I want to get to 20 mph average speed, do I need to trade this hybrid bike in and get a road bike?
