AITA for deciding to not live with my roommate.
Hello I (21f) had made plans to move in with my best friend (21f). We lived together previously for two years during undergrad before but our third roommate last minute screwed us over and decided to in June that she wasn’t going to live with us anymore when we were meant to move out by July. This put a huge dent in both my best friends and I’s financial situation as it was so last minute we had to split up and move into ridiculously expensive student apartments because there was no other houses or apartments available. I am a first generation student and am going to school out-of-state and pay for all my living, food, and gas expenses while I finish school. Because of my now ridiculously high rent I burned through all of my savings, couldn’t fly home for Christmas break, and also had to find a full-time job during my senior year. The plan was for my best friend and I to live together again during my gap year before grad school in a house. And although my financial situation is better I am still just getting by. However, issues back home including my parent’s divorce , the passing of my mom’s bio dad, and my little sister’s poor mental health have made me feel guilty about not being able to travel as much to visit and support them. I was planning on visiting every three months of so during my grad year and make sure I get to be there for Christmas since I spent last Christmas alone. Now, my old car has been having more and more issues and it is now time that I have to replace it within the next four months or so. I know I won’t be able to afford a car payment, rent, and traveling expenses right out of college. After this weekend I made the decision to move back home and live with my mom and little sister during my gap year. This wasn’t my original plan but life happens and I would like to be there for my family more, buy a new car,and also save for grad school so I am not swimming in student debt. I have told my best friend today that as a lot of family issues have come up at home during this year and I want to be there with them. She got noticeably quiet and each time gave my very short replies during our talk. I feel really guilty because even though I know she can manage with just one roommate (we were planning on living with her high school friend) but I know she was looking forward to cheaper rent and also living with me again. Whenever she is upset she shuts down and because of our situation last year I am afraid I have really messed up with her. I just fell guilty because she is my best friend in the whole world and I hate to think that I ruined her life and she will hate me for this. AITA? (Sorry for any errors I am on my phone and this is my first post)
