Wrapping an IEM's existing cable for tangle prevention/aesthetics
Howdy all,
So I recently succumbed to the hype and ordered the Moondrop Chu as my first venture into IEMs. Looking at reviews, the biggest negative people seem to have with them is the allegedly quite tangle-happy (and non-removable) cable. Since I'm not deep enough into this hobby yet to consider opening/modifying the Chu to replace the cable, I'm hoping I can non-destructively modify the existing cable by wrapping it with something so it tangles less and maybe gains some aesthetic flair in the process. It's been difficult to find anything about such a mod online, so hopefully somebody here will have some more insight or experience to share! TIA :)
Some options I'm considering so far, feel free to comment on or suggest others:
-"Friendship bracelet"-style weaving around the og cable. This was my first thought, and there are lots of examples of people doing this with embroidery floss, but that almost always seems to end up looking kinda fuzzy and not very clean/professional. If I go this route I'd probably try to find some thin-diameter plastic cord as an alternative.
-Paracord or PET wire sleeving (techflex, MDPCX, etc). Familiar to me from building custom USB cables, but AFAICT couldn't slide over the angled connector or IEM bodies. But maybe there's a version I'm unfamiliar with that'd work?
-Spiral cable protectors. These seem like they do roughly what I'm looking to do and they're pretty cheap. The only downside is that I haven't found any way to get specific colors in a reasonable timeframe, so the end aesthetic would be less in my control. Would love to know if anybody's used something like this before & how it went.
TL;DR new IEM's cable known to be tangly, can't swap/replace cable, looking to wrap it with something to reduce tangling and not look like trash.
