Hue gradient strip not showing multiple colors while watching tv

Im wondering if I have misunderstood this product, but I'm hoping someone could help me out.

1/ Ive got a hue sync box and its hooked up to my hue gradient strip behind my tv

2/ The color is always the same, the gradient feature doesn't seem to really be doing anything but change the entire strip to the same major color on screen as in the background.

3/ My understanding was the gradient strip was going to understand the corners of the tv and project those colors out. But it doesn't seem to be doing that ( like I said it's basically working like a normal hue strip)

4/ I know I can change these manually when I'm not watching tv, but that's not really why I bought this. Is this the case for everyone, or do I need to enable some sort of setting.
