usernames

hey! i was wondering if usernames are exclusive to one person? for example, there is a user named “jake,” meaning that if someone tried to name themself “jake,” it would say the username was taken? i’m curious because today i changed my username to “milo” (my name) with no problem. so, can anyone name themself a username or is it exclusive?
