How to find a teacher
I live in the GTA in Ontario, and I am looking for a Buddhist teacher. I’m not looking to become ordained, but I do want to learn to incorporate the teachings into my life such that it goes beyond a sitting practise, and becomes an integral part of who I am. I feel I am sorely lacking depth, meaning, and empathy in my life.
I’ve read some good books; I am currently reading The Science of Enlightenment, have read some of Thich Nhat Hanh’s work, and as great as these books are, the authors always highlight the importance of finding a real teacher - emphasizing that there is no comparison. Sam Harris says the same as well.
Does anyone know how I can find this? Can I just go to a Buddhist temple? I tried a “Meet Up”, but it was a lot of new age crystal talk that seemed completely off base. I would like to find someone or a group that can guide me along a more traditional path.
So far, Shinzen Young and Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche have “spoken to me” the most - if it helps.
I really appreciate anyone that can help me navigate this - I hope this is the right place to ask. Thank you.
