Crate schedule for a 3 month old?

Does anyone have any tips or advice regarding a crate schedule for a 3 month old puppy? He’s very quiet when outside the crate normally and likes lounging, but the second you put him in a crate he will scream bloody murder. I’ve tried toys and feeding and treats in the crate but after he is done with them he will whine and bark. Is the only option here to keep a consistent schedule and ignore him while he whines?

I’ve tried to tire him out through running/playing but he will get sleepy and try to nap on the ground throughout the day but when I lure him to the crate instead he will stay up and howl. I’ve also been covering his crate with a blanket as when I don’t he tends to bark more whether I am in the room or not. Does anyone have any tips or tricks I can try? I really would like him to be crate trained to help with his potty training and also because I do travel quite a bit so I’d like him to be prepared when he’s older.
