Something like Shutter Island
It doesn't have to be in a constrained space, though that is a plus. What I'm mainly looking for is the vibe and atmosphere - the main character slowly starts feeling like somethings off, everyone starts looking suspicious, an eerie mystery starts to be found - though maybe not necessarily unraveled or solved.
The cinematic shots, the smouldering slow burn of the suspense through the visuals, that's a major plus. Obviously it'll be in written form though. Examples would be the storm scenes in shutter island, or exploring the cliff - or, in True Detective S1, Rust searching the abandoned, dilapidated churches in the middle of nowhere to find the killers traces/calling card.
What I don't want is stuff like Sharp Objects. The show is a lie - it uses the above descriptions like an outer skin, a glamorous dress, but inside its just a family drama. I hate that people keep recommending it - it was decent, but it always felt like it was just about to get good and never did. That's because it falsely promised the intense and creepy, bizarre mystery/suspense but delivered again and again, character vulnerabilities and family drama. That isn't a bad thing usually, if that's what you like - but it isn't what was promised nor what I'm looking for. It's like if Dicaprio in shutter Island kept exploring his feelings and weaknesses instead of the mystery, and at the end we get some limp cold half assed resolution because "the mystery was never the point, it was the characterization, the family twists, the (...)"
Also, I don't want pointless action shoved in. No gunfights, fighting, whatever. It wasn't in shutter island for a reason.
You can also suggest movies or tv shows or whatever else fits the bill
