First off; Luke 12:49-53 is not an endorsement by Jesus for division, shunning people, or a culture war. 

On the cross Jesus says, “my god my god why have you abandoned me.”  We know that Jesus isn’t actually saying that the father has abandoned him. No, of course not. Jesus is intoning in he first line of psalm 22. He is intoning the first line in the hope that those who hear him will recall the rest of the entire passage and use the theme of the passage to understand what he is doing and the meaning behind it. 

Likewise Luke 12:49-53 is Jesus intoning Micah 7:6 and the following passage (Micah 7:6-20) Jesus IS NOT encouraging division and shunning people. He is not encouraging conflict and division. He is intoning a whole passage in the hopes that the meaning of the passage will help explain what Jesus is doing, why he is doing it, and what it all means. 

Secondly, I’d simply ask, “how would you love your sisters if they were not supporters of abortion?”

With the recent news about Roe v Wade my sisters (fallen away Catholics) have been vocal about their support for abortion.

My parents and I are faithful Catholics and we try our best to live the faith. Their support for this makes me feel like I’ve been stabbed in the heart. All I can think about is Luke 12:51-53.
