Landlord abandoned live animals for us to assume care of. How can we be recompensed for their care?

Landlord Tenant Housing

My LL left 9 ducks and 4 finches in our care. She framed them as a “gift” but we didn’t agree to assuming responsibility over them.

Before we moved into the rental we were aware of the birds, she even showed them to us in the walkthrough but it was our misunderstanding that she’d find them homes before leaving the house to us.

The finches were loose in our bedroom when we were handed the keys, and we spent a great deal of time and money cleaning bird feces off the walls and out of the carpets before we could move our belongings in.

We’ve now spent over a months rent in bird feed and bedding. Asking to be reimbursed by our LL has been wildly unsuccessful. What are our options?

[Edit for clarity: we are in touch with local animal rescues, trying to organize their relocation. We simply can’t assume care for all these animals at this time. LL’s solution to this problem when we asked for recompensation was to “just kill them”, so we are trying to have them rescued]
