Sister Friede- Still a masterpiece of boss design
I beat Friede solo melee on my sorcery build today, just to give myself some extra challenge, and I still think she's a fantastic boss in almost every facet of design. And I mean I love Elden Ring but I can't help but to compare her to Malenia a bit, since both are dex based female fighters tied to a specific element with multiple phases.
Friede seems unfair at first because she moves waaaay faster and more fluidly than you can, and reacts quickly to what you do as a player. And like Malenia, she has low poise and can easily be staggered out of attacks. So because of her mobility, you have to prioritise spacing, lest she very quickly combo you into oblivion. But as you fight, you realise that you can utilise the spacing to gain an upper hand on her, the invisibility 'execution' move is deadly if it hits you, but if you are able to find her footsteps or track her movement, you can interrupt for a massive punish.
Phase 1 introduces you to her moveset, and acts as the warmup, Phase 2 tests your spacing and drains your resources while Friede mostly sits back. Then Phase 3 begins the REAL fight, you start it at an inherent disadvantage, the pressure is high, you've probably burned through a fair amount of resources and you have a whole new moveset to deal with. Her weaknesses are still present though, and you have to use your knowledge of that in addition to quick thinking to play around her new dark attacks(that look visually awesome btw), it rewards skill in the very best way. Frostbite is a constant threat throughout, and avoiding it is key because it slows you down, thus rendering you more vulnerable to her combos.
I think my issue with Malenia in comparison was that her mechanics are just designed to be unfair and annoying, and yes I know the fight can be mastered, but even SL1 and no hit runners use cheese tactics to consistently beat her. What I love about Friede is that the difficulty of it seems perfectly tuned, and successfully playing around Friede's moveset just feels so satisfying. Not to mention the god tier soundtrack and overall mood of the fight, I still think DS3 and Bloodborne are the peak of boss design in this franchise.
