Are you transporting the kitty in a crate or just in the passenger compartment?

I only ever transport my cat in a crate and she literally does not stop yelling at me the entire time.

We've driven as far as 5 hours with her in the crate and she did not stop yelling the entire time.

I've been tempted to try letting her out of the crate to see if she calms down because I think she probably would but I just can't take a chance on something happening to her if we were in a traffic accident or sneaking out of the vehicle when someone opens the door..

Depends on the cat. My late kitty Ambrose was a bad traveler, but calmed down if it was over 100 miles. My late Immy just chilled because she just knew we were heading to the kennel, which she adored. 

My dad's late cat complained nonstop. Traveling from Florida to Tucson with her was apparently an ordeal until she got laryngitis.

Up until this point, I have only taken my cat on short car trips to the vet. She *hates* them and is very anxious every time. I am considering moving 2.5 hours away, and I was wondering if anyone has experience with a cat like this on long car rides. Will she eventually calm and acclimate to the motion of the car? Or will she be terrified all 2.5 hours? Any advice or personal experiences would be very valuable. Thank you!
