How do you keep yourself in the dark when running a mystery?

I’m running a Blade Runner game for myself. In order to keep me from just creating a mystery my character then solves, I’ve been using the oracle to confirm guesses similar to the way one names suspects in Clue.

How have you kept yourself in the dark?
