Being friends with Christians, non believers etc

What is the Islamic approach to friendship with Christians, non believers etc?

I hear it can’t be the same as with a fellow Muslim, but it can still exist.

To what extent can that be?

I also hear that a Muslim male can marry a non believing female ( or person of book) but a Muslim female cannot marry a male person of book. Why is that?
