Thoughts from a newbie
I've only been playing for about 4 weeks now (35 hours) so I'm pretty new to all this but there's one thing that seem to be a HUGE issue with this game and that's the asymmetry. Foxhole is a game I've been imagining for years and when I first heard of it I couldn't buy it fast enough. After only 4 weeks though the constant talk about balance issues and dev bias is just draining and tilting (and I was on the Wardens side last war).
The strange thing is I saw a poll not long ago on here asking the community if they like the asymmetry of the factions or if they'd prefer both factions have access to the same weapons/vehicles and most people wanted to keep the factions different. The problem with this, as far as I can tell, is there is no possible way to actually balance the game then - no matter how close you get in balance there will still be a favored side - ESPECIALLY if the devs plan on continuing to add new weapons and vehicles. That means every new addition to the game no matter how small probably will require many weeks of observation and many months of balance. The alternative to this is both sides get access to everything equally, so when a new weapon or vehicle is added to the game the discussion isn't about how unfair it is to one faction, nobody quits playing, nobody sits out the war, nobody tilts because of it - instead, the discussion is about how best to use the new tool.
The main problem with the asymmetry of Foxhole might not even be balance issues (I don't know, I'm new), it might be the perception of balance issues. Either way though, it's an issue.
I don't think I would care as much if I just stuck to fighting on the front lines but I feel guilty fighting in this game without also contributing on the logi side. Logi isn't that much fun but it is necessary. It's possible to have fun even if you lose a battle but if you just spent the last hour doing boring logi work only to have it destroyed by an asymmetrical advantage given to the other side.... ugh. Losing your logi work to another team that simply outplayed your team using the same tools... that doesn't hurt as much because the perception is they won that fight fair and square.
There are probably other ways to address this issue than perfect balance - maybe the factions can vote on which vehicles and weapons they want to use before the war starts (that way they only have themselves to blame if they don't chose the best ones). I'm probably too new to make any actual contributions to this discussion and from the posts I've seen today the asymmetry doesn't just apply to weapons and vehicles but also starting locations and building placement. I don't know how to fix that, I assume even people who want parity in weapons would prefer to keep the map asymmetrical.
Balance might be the most difficult part in making a game like this but it's an absolutely critical part because we're all playing this for fun but Foxhole, unlike a lot of games, requires you to not JUST do the fun parts like fighting alongside your allies but also do the boring part of getting supplies to the front lines. I don't know how you keep people doing the long lonely drives if all their hard work is perceived as a fools errand.
