My mom vilified my dad’s new husband but he actually turned out to be a great role model for me.
My parents went through a nasty divorce when I was a kid. My dad realized he was gay so they got separated. It was really traumatic and my mom vilified my dad’s new SO when I was growing up and filled my head with homophobic thoughts so I’ve always been terrified of meeting him.
Well, me and my dad went to see the new Doctor Strange movie with him (great movie btw) and he actually turned out to be a wonderful person. We had a great talk about Marvel lore and he recommended some more movies I should watch afterwards. It was a great experience and for the first time in years I felt like I finally had loving parents that cared about me.
Now I’m extremely ashamed of how homophobic I used to be because of my childhood. I was a horrible person growing up because I believed my mom when she told me how evil gay people were and that they took my dad from me.
Have any of you guys been through something like this? I’m working on rewiring all those homophobic thoughts from my brain now. Should I look into therapy? What should my next steps be?
