I did some math on the Giants Forge vs traditional smithing -- in terms of a training method, it's a complete noob trap (i.e. bad, very bad)
First, the math spreadsheet:
The first sheet is a convenient summary of GP/XP and additional hours at the Forge for equivalent XP (compared to darts or platebodies). It also lists the key assumptions. The second sheet does all the math and actual calculations.
In summary:
-
If you're making platebodies, bronze and rune will save you money on XP but take longer.
-
If you're doing iron through adamant platebodies, you're losing the same amount of GP, or worse, doing Giants Forge vs smithing plates. Adamant plates are even net profit.
-
Darts are all net profit compared to Giants Forge, excluding rune. Bronze through steel will take slightly longer at Giants Forge, while mithril through rune is actually faster at Giants Forge.
In other words? Once you have the rewards, there is absolutely no reason you should be training here instead of doing traditional smithing. Even for ironmen, you're spending so much extra time at the Forge that you could've just done Zalcano during that time and go right back to higher XP/hr smithing.
The Giants Forge needs a significant XP buff. It doesn't save money, even for low level players. Darts are comparable or better XP, and are PROFITABLE.
