West End Reviews?

Hey guys, I recently got accepted to Epic and noticed an apartment complex very near the campus. If anyone currently lives there or has lived there, how would you say it was? The management? Anything broken?

Lived there for 2 years. Clean facilities, though the residents' gym etiquette is terrible (not sure whether this is unusual). Property managers are very responsive, proactive, kind, and decent. I moved out only because I didn't want to live in Verona anymore (also, living next to the High School is annoying due to the traffic and the noise).

Recent hire who moved halfway across the country into the West End without ever seeing it, mostly because they had an opening and were cool with my dog breed.

We love it; no complaints about the management so far, and maintenance has been either quick to fix the few issues we've had or very apologetic and communicative if they're delayed.

The sub-5 minute commute to work is sick, and for an extra $50/month/vehicle you get a designated space in the underground parking - otherwise it's aboveground only.

Can't speak to the amenities, as we've not really used them.

The only 'negative' is that we're across the street from the Verona high school, so getting in and out can be a bit inconvenient at certain times.

I'm also looking at West End because of Epic! (Commenting so I can look back at this)

Hey! I currently live there.

Pros:

Good square footage. I remember Timberlake Village only had apartments with 450 sq ft back when I was looking for an apartment, and I knew I wanted more than that.

Close to Epic campus which helps for my shitty low mileage car. Also nice if you want to sleep in, or do work from home in the mornings / night. One of the main selling points for me was that if my car broke down, I would still have stability and safety in getting to work.

The maintenance team and staff. I’ve had 2 things break and they were immediately fixed the next day when I put in a maintenance request.

Underground parking. I paid for a garage spot, and in the winter it was a lifesaver. There’s a lot of really good parking there in the non-winter as well.

You’re a 20 minute drive to the capitol. If you find college kids and crowds annoying, then this place is awesome.

Cons:

You’re a 20 minute drive to the capitol. I also had this in pros, because it depends on what type of person you are. I’ve been climbing a bunch downtown, so I end up commuting/carpooling more than I’d like to.

Small gym. You’ll want to spend 10$ a month for a PF membership, or get a Boulder’s membership if you want to actually work out.

Quiet neighbors. I haven’t met too many people at the apartment complex. This could also be a pro depending on how much you value peace and quiet.

If you’re interested in anything else DM me. I’m currently halfway looking for a subleaser for my lease that ends in October. I’ve been lazy about putting out ads so far, but if you were moving at the right time I’d be down to try to make something work. IDK if they have many spots currently available

I looked at these apartments a few years ago when I started.

  • My impression is that a fair amount of Epic personnel live there — so if you like the idea of being around coworkers all the time, then that’s a plus.
  • Overall the apartments themselves were nice. I remember that the common areas like hallways were really dirty such as carpet stains and marks/scratches on the walls. Perhaps that’s better now.
  • Underground parking cost extra — not uncommon, but I got a place that included it for free.
  • The overall complex is fairly contained and small. There’s some very large complexes in the area that offer better outdoor spaces.
  • I remember the gym being a literal closet. Lol
  • The entrance is a very busy intersection that includes the town’s high school now. Getting to the new gas station nearby was a pain during school getting out. Putting up with that would be a pain IMO.
  • It is very close and people seem to walk or ride their bikes to work from the complex often.
  • It is near the highway, so I assume you can easily hear that noise when you have open windows. Also means it’s easy to get to downtown Madison too.

Overall, probably a decent place to live as a new hire. You’ll find better places once you get to know the area. If you want a short commute, then it’s a good spot.

I recently moved away from there.

It's fairly inexpensive, it's literally walkable to Epic (my walk was ~15-20 minutes when I worked at Epic), and it has a decent (though small) gym and reasonable common areas.

Other little fun parts are a next-door coffee shop (Grace), a gas station and good mini-mart across the street (Kwik Trip), a short walk to the Military Ridge Trail (which is awesome for biking and running), and the Verona Area High School, where you can swim in the pool for a very inexpensive pass.

The main downside is that there is no on-site management or repair, so it can take a day or two to get new keys or things fixed.

I have no specific experience with West End, but for apartments in general, make sure you like the area you’re in. If you’re looking for a really short commute, Verona will work. If you’re looking to be near a ton of stuff and easy access to bus lines, near the capitol/east side is good. Near Hilldale Mall is also a good option if you are torn between the commute and more urban vibes.
