I love new models but...

Discussion

A slight rant.

I'm excited when new stuff comes out, even armies I don't play. But I just can't help the thought of how many models are still in metal. When can we get rid of this horrible quality product?

The cherry on top is, they're bringing out a 30k line. But there are still key models for many armies that are still only available in metal. At the same price too.

Am I the only one thinking about this?

I love old metal models personally but understand those who don’t as plastic is obviously more ideal….finecast on the other hand…

What about metal models do you love?

Less fiddly for one. Many modern GW plastics are over detailed and fragile. Hand sculpted figures also have a certain charm & realism IMO.

I weirdly like the smell after cleaning off the flash but more importantly the feel/nostalgia of it. 20 years ago I hated metal kits as a kid but I’ve purchased kits solely because they were still available in metal in recent years as they’ve been slowly discontinuing it.

That's probably the best reason.

I started in second Ed. My entire tyranid army was metal and I've already had the hardest time keeping them from chipping paint, even after sealing it.

Fixing it if a piece ever breaks is awful as well. Which seemed to be often, glue never seemed to hold well.

I would chime in with this about metal models: Robustness)

how many models are still in metal

How many is that?

Not very many at all. In fact I can't think of any you can still buy in metal. Pretty much all are finecast

Legit the only one I found was Pask.

There is more than that for just guard. Primaris psykers, wyrdvane psykers, and ratings just to name a few

The ork warboss with big choppa, introduced in 3rd ed, is still metal

Rather metal than finecast

I should probably extend the disinterest in finecast as well, that's horrible quality too.

For me the metal mini's hold up better for their age than finecast does

The metal range shrinks noticeably every year, nothing new has been added in metal for years. It'll be a memory very soon so you can relax I guess.

I’m legit curious about the economies of scale involved here as regards the models themselves as well as (I presume) the molds they are made from as well as metal VS plastic.

Yes

I love metal models. But I'm an old fart from 3rd edition

There’s tons of fine cast stuff that’s horrible, so yeah, I kinda agree. The Dark Eldar line is like half fine cast.
