Eurovision 2022: My Top 40 With Comments (One week before the final)
This year is very good. There are a lot of different genres this year, there are more languages than the usual year has and it probably has the most fun entries in a long time. Some of these entries are now my favorite entry for that country. There are only a few entries that I don't like. Shame that a lot of my favorites most likely won't qualify.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I haven't seen any rehearsal images/footage yet.
40: Malta 🇲🇹 (Emma Muscat - I Am What I Am) (RATING: 3.5/10)
This song is not bad by any means, it's just very generic. The lyrics are especially generic. It sounds like the usual Swedish pop songs that existed from 2015 to 2018 (then again the song has some Swedish songwriters so of course it does).
39: Bulgaria 🇧🇬 (Intelligent Music Project - Intention) (RATING: 4.5/10)
It's pretty sad to see Bulgaria go from amazing entries to this. The music feels a bit disjointed, the lyrics are mediocre and it's a little hard for me to bear Ronnie's voice. I'm happy that Stoyan is back tho, and the guitar solo is pretty good.
38: Switzerland 🇨🇭 (Marius Bear - Boys Do Cry) (RATING: 5/10)
I think that I probably like this more than other people do. It's soothing, has a nice meaning and reminds me of a Disney song (which can sometimes be a bad thing, but it works here). Unfortunately, This song comes lower in my ranking because of some of the weird stuff Marius has done (throwing his socks to the audience, making NFTs, etc.)
37: North Macedonia 🇲🇰 (Andrea - Circles) (RATING: 5/10)
It's less generic than Malta, but it still has some flaws. I wish that the chorus was better and that the song had a second verse. However, the performances in the pre-party shows are, vocally, pretty good.
36: Cyprus 🇨🇾 (Andromache - Ela) (RATING: 5/10)
OK, before you leave, I wanna say that I like this song. I just don't like it as much as other people do. I feel like it needs more power. I also feel like something is missing. I don't know what, but...something.
35: Moldova 🇲🇩 (Zdob și Zdub & Frații Advahov - Trenulețul) (RATING: 6/10)
I like this song. The new revamped version is worse than the old one, the old one was more charming, but it is still fine. I'm excited to see what the staging is gonna be, considering the fact that they're apparently gonna have a TRAIN on stage.
34: Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 (Nadir Rüstəmli - Fade To Black) (RATING: 6/10)
The song itself is not anything too special. The lyrics are also kinda bad (like Malta, it is written by Swedish songwriters so that's why). But the song is definitely elevated by Nadir's vocals. They are my favorite part of the song.
33: Latvia 🇱🇻 (Citi Zēni - Eat Your Salad) (RATING: 6/10)
It's a fun song with a good message. A lot of people say that this is a joke entry, and while I can see why they say that, I personally don't think it is one. Their live performances are pretty good as well. It's just lower in the ranking cause I like the other songs more.
32: Croatia 🇭🇷 (Mia Dimšić - Guilty Pleasure) (RATING: 6/10)
I have an interesting story with this song. I was happy when it won Dora, then it grew off me a lot. But for the past few days, it's been growing back on me. Unlike most people, I'm a little sad that the dancer from the national final won't be in the Eurovision performance.
31: Estonia 🇪🇪 (Stefan - Hope) (RATING: 6/10)
There were many songs from the national final that I preferred to this song (Jaagup Tuisk, Maian and Ariadne are my top 3 of Eesti Laul), but I think that this song was the best choice to get a good result in Eurovision. It's a good song and the staging is cool.
30: Germany 🇩🇪 (Malik Harris - Rockstars) (RATING: 6.5/10)
This has a similar situation to Croatia. I liked it when it won, it grew off me and then it grew back on me. It's one of the better songs Germany has sent to the contest since the 21st century began.
29: San Marino 🇸🇲 (Achille Lauro - Stripper) (RATING: 6.5/10)
When I first heard this song, I expected something better from Achille & put it 18th out of 19th. Now, I find it catchy and cool, despite the very odd and confusing lyrics (i love britney).
28: Greece 🇬🇷 (Amanda Tenfjord - Die Together) (RATING: 6.5/10)
It's a good song, but not a song I would listen to on repeat. There are many more songs that I like more than this one. Let's see if the staging will make me like the song more.
27: Spain 🇪🇸 (Chanel - SloMo) (RATING: 6.5/10)
This used to be my favorite back when there were only 5 or 9 songs. I thought the song was amazing back then, it was my favorite of Benidorm Fest and the live performance only made it better. But now, it has grown off me A LOT. And I honestly don't know why! I still like the song, but way less.
26: Lithuania 🇱🇹 (Monika Liu - Sentimentai) (RATING: 7/10)
I like this song because it feels like it could have been released in the past, present or future. I really like the sound of it. The staging is also pretty nice. Also, FINALLY, a song in Lithuanian! (Also Monika Liu is a queen)
25: Albania 🇦🇱 (Ronela Hajati - Sekret) (RATING: 7/10)
The first pop song from Albania since 2010. I think that the revamp, while a little worse, is pretty good. I really like the "një, dy, tre ta marrsha" part.
24: Israel 🇮🇱 (Michael Ben David - I.M.) (RATING: 7/10)
I've enjoyed this song ever since it was first released. Michael is a very good live performer. The revamp was a bit of a letdown, but still good. I liked the chorus of the original more than the new one.
23: Armenia 🇦🇲 (Rosa Linn - Snap) (RATING: 7/10)
This song is a big grower. I remember that one week the one was in my bottom 10. The week after, it was 24th, which is not that impressive, but still a big jump. It's a very nice song. It's very chill and I like the meaning of the song.
22: Italy 🇮🇹 (Mahmood & Blanco - Brividi) (RATING: 7/10)
Nice to see Mahmood back! This is a very nice ballad. Blanco and Mahmood are very good singers. I do believe that the song is a tad overrated (by a tad, I mean quite).
21: Iceland 🇮🇸 (Systur - Með Hækkandi Sól) (RATING: 7/10)
Like Armenia, this is a very chill and cozy song. I really like the lyrics as well. I fully expected Reykjavíkurdætur to win Söngvakeppnin, so Systur winning was a surprise, but a welcome one!
20: Georgia 🇬🇪 (Circus Mircus - Lock Me In) (RATING: 7.5/10)
I love it when Georgia decides to go crazy like in 2012, 2014 and 2016, and this is no exception! I think it's very catchy and fun, and I also like how weird it is. I really like the idea of masked singers, so that's another reason why I like this so much (also a reason for why I like Subwoolfer's song).
19: Finland 🇫🇮 (The Rasmus - Jezebel) (RATING: 7.5/10)
While I do think that the lyrics are...worse than bad, I still really like the song. There are flaws with it (again, the lyrics), but I still enjoy it. Can't wait to see the staging for it.
18: Austria 🇦🇹 (LUM!X & Pia Maria - Halo) (RATING: 7.5/10)
In a post I made earlier, I said that I would keep Austria in the top 15, despite the vocals. Well, I'm gonna have to break that promise. As much as I love this song, I'm gonna have to put it lower due to the vocals.
17: Ukraine 🇺🇦 (Kalush Orchestra - Stefania) (RATING: 8/10)
I prefer Alina Pash's song waaaaaay more than this, but this is still very good. It's a very good mix of Ukrainian folk music and rap. The live performance is also very good, but Tymofii needs to improve on his vocals. I think that Ukraine shouldn't win, because if they do, how will they do it, considering the war going on there right now?
16: Montenegro 🇲🇪 (Vladana - Breathe) (RATING: 8/10)
This song has a lot of stuff that I like a lot. It has very good vocals, nice lyrics, a deep message and more. Looking at the pre-party performances, she hasn't been vocally perfect, but they seem to be improving so that's good.
15: Norway 🇳🇴 (Subwoolfer - Give That Wolf a Banana) (RATING: 8/10)
I was very happy when this won MGP. I think that the live performance was very good staging-wise. I also really like how the song sounds. I don't know if the lyrics are supposed to reference COVID-19, but it seems very likely. I hope the juries don't kill the chance of this getting a good placement.
14: Belgium 🇧🇪 (Jérémie Makiese - Miss You) (RATING: 8.5/10)
I wish this song was liked more. It always hurts a little whenever I see Belgium low down on a list. I think it's very modern and the lyrics are good. Jérémie's voice in the studio version, honestly, sounds amazing! Live, however, it's not great. He seems to have a hard time hitting the high notes in the chorus.
13: Australia 🇦🇺 (Sheldon Riley - Not the Same) (RATING: 9/10)
There are 3 specific things that I love about this song:
- How deep the lyrics are. They are very good.
- How Sheldon sings so well (and emotionally).
- How the staging in the national final looks. It looks very nice.
Overall, it's a spectacular song with an awesome singer. He also seems very nice.
12: Portugal 🇵🇹 (Maro - Saudade, saudade) (RATING: 9/10)
This was not my winner of Festival da Canção (Aurea was), but this is still an amazing song. The meaning of the song is beautiful. Also, the word "Saudade", to me, sounds pretty cool. The guitar in the instrumental sounds very nice. I bet the staging will look AMAZING.
11: Poland 🇵🇱 (Ochman - River) (RATING: 9/10)
I'm surprised that Poland managed to get so much better so quickly. I like the live version a lot more than the studio version. Both of them are great vocally, but the notes Ochman hits in the chorus in the live version sound way better than in the studio version. The staging in the national final wasn't the best, but I still really liked it.
10: Czech Republic 🇨🇿 (We Are Domi - Lights Off) (RATING: 9/10)
I'm super worried that the performance will be ruined due to bad vocals because I think the song is very good. It was my favorite of ESCZ 2022 and the revamp made it even better. It sounds very good and it's a big upgrade from last year.
9: Netherlands 🇳🇱 (S10 - De diepte) (RATING: 9/10)
This song reminds me of the songs I would listen to when I was younger (Riptide, Prayer In C, etc.). It's calm, Stien sings well and it's the first Dutch song since 2010. The meaning of the song is also very deep.
8: Denmark 🇩🇰 (Reddi - The Show) (RATING: 9.5/10)
It sucks to see this so low in most tops. It's such a good song! Many people say that DMGP's lineup was pretty weak, but I disagree. I really like the switch from slow ballad to fast-paced pop-rock and the key change is very nice. I hope they qualify!
7: Romania 🇷🇴 (WRS - Llámame) (RATING: 9.5/10)
This was my favorite of Selecția Națională ever since it was announced. Normally I don't like Latin pop songs like this (Suave from Mello this year is pretty low down on my list), but this is very catchy and good. The national final live performance is also very good (also this song has been stuck in my head since it won Selecția Națională help)
6: United Kingdom 🇬🇧 (Sam Ryder - Spaceman) (RATING: 10/10)
FINALLY the UK is sending something amazing to Eurovision! Sam has the best vocals out of any participant this year. His live performances at the pre-parties were very good. I really like the lyrics and the meaning of the song. It would be fun to see the UK go from dead last with zero points to winning!
5: Sweden 🇸🇪 (Cornelia Jakobsdotter - Hold Me Closer) (RATING: 10/10)
I think that Sweden has the highest chance of winning this year. I was afraid that this was not gonna win Mello, but thank god it did! It's one of the deepest songs of this year, the lyrics are great and Cornelia's vocals, while for some could be too raspy, are incredible. Not just that, the staging is simple but effective. It goes to show that less is more sometimes.
4: Slovenia 🇸🇮 (LPS - Disko) (RATING: 10/10)
This song is, honestly, the best song Slovenia has sent to Eurovision. I pretty much love everything about this song. The vocals, the staging, the music, the instruments, how it's about the lead singer being dumped at a disco, all of it! However, I am extremely worried that it won't qualify. If it doesn't qualify, I will probably cry.
3: Serbia 🇷🇸 (Konstrakta - In Corpore Sano) (RATING: 10/10) 🥉
Whenever I listen to this song, I feel an emotion that is hard to describe. The lyrics are very deep, the staging is great and I love how avant-garde it is. Konstrakta is also a very good performer. The pre-party performances are great and she will definitely serve on stage. I really like how the song can be interpreted in many different ways (the one about it being a tribute to Miroslav Ničić, one of the members of the band that Konstrakta was in, who had no health insurance and died from leukemia is pretty sad). I hope that this will get a good placement.
2: France 🇫🇷 (Alvan & Ahez - Fulenn) (RATING: 10/10) 🥈
I love this song. I can explain it in a somewhat normal way: It's kind of like a cake. When you first see the cake (the staging), it looks very cool. Then, when you eat your first slice of the cake, the taste of it (the music, the lyrics, the fact that it is in Breton) is amazing. This is very different from the other songs this year. Their performance at Eurovision France, c'est vous qui décidez was great. They probably won't beat their result last year (They came 2nd. That's very hard to beat), but I think that they could get a top 10 placement.
1: Ireland 🇮🇪 (Brooke Scullion - That's Rich) (RATING: 10/10) 🥇
I...honestly don't know why this is my favorite of Eurovision 2022. I would try to write a comment about this song and why I love it so much to the point where it is my favorite, but I genuinely can't think of something to write. All I can say is, despite a not good national final, Ireland managed to send an entry that, for the first time, came first in one of my Eurovision rankings. The pre-party performances have been a little disappointing, but I still hope that the Eurovision performance is gonna be good. Like Slovenia, I am very worried that they are not going to qualify.
