Am I being selfish for wanting support too
My partner (M 27) and I (F 27) were due to get married this year, but his mother is a narcissist and complete control freak, so made both our lives living hell during the lead up. She went on to abuse my parents and I, so my parents called off the wedding. That same night, my partner told his mother that he’s moving out and wants to be NC with her and that he wants to be with me. Adding to the madness - my partners father finally saw the light too, that she has been controlling him too for years and has said enough is enough and wants to divorce his wife. (This should give you an idea how toxic and controlling she is that her son and husband want to leave her).
Anyway. It’s been about 5 weeks since this has all happened and I’m trying my best to be there for my partner and check in on him and his well-being a lot (we still want to get married but have agreed now is not best and he needs to be there for his dad and help him through the divorce + he’s mad a big decision to leave home and be NC).
The issue I have is when I do ask him anything related to what’s happening, he doesn’t talk about it acts as if nothings happened at all. Basically shuts down on the topic. We’ve only spoken about it properly, once, and that was when we went out for drinks a week back so he was really relaxed. Other than that I can’t get him to open up but I feel I have so many unanswered questions and my own mental health has been affected since the beginning of our new life was round the corner and things have completely changed now.
I also feel he’s really distant these days and never asks me how I’m doing or how my days been etc, but instead I’m always first to ask and make sure he’s ok and what he’s been up to etc. I’m aware he’s going through a lot but I feel we should be each other’s support whereas right now it feels only I’m supporting him and not vice versa. Am I being selfish for thinking this :(
TLDR: feel the support is one way and my partner is being distant with me but he’s also struggling so I’m finding it hard to balance sympathy towards him and wanting support myslef.
