Is there any way to get more gold or to just remove the "labor costs"?

Question

The game is really fun and all, but after a while it gets extremely "grindy" and tedious. I am not making much progression and every run (which takes at least like 30 minutes or more) only gives me enoug gold for like 1 upgrade, but there are like 500 upgrades I want to get...

I know I can use house rules, but thats just not what I want AT ALL. I don't want to be able to go into zones that I could not beat yet by making the enemies easier, that somehow to me feels much worse than if I just cheated myself a bunch of gold...

This is currently the only thing that annoys me about this game but it annoys me so much that I kinda want to stop playing alltogether. I hate grinding so much...

this is what you want https://www.nexusmods.com/roguelegacy2/mods/4

And i agreed, i have close to no feeling of progression before, now it's better i just cut in half labour upgrade cost but you can get rid of it if you prefer

Sad console noises.

Now I know there’s mods!

Oh man thank you, this will quicken the grind considerably

Yea when I was thinking about it I thought "if devs cut the cost in half it would probably still be fine". Base costs might be a bit too low then, but I will try halving it at first. Thank you!

You have to be beating hard stuff to make big progress. Later biomes drop more money, so if your runs keep ending in half an hour maybe just play with some house rules to make the game easier on you.

they take longer but the gold/min is just soooo low and there are so many upgrades. with half labor costs its SO much better now, no clue what they were thinking. looks like artificial padding to make the game longer and more grindy because for some reason some people seem to like that.

“no clue what they were thinking”

I’ve never noticed the labour costs in the slightest, so it’s never bothered me at all. There’s a reason house rules exist, and I don’t get why downloading a mod makes you feel so much better than just making the difficulty a little easier to speed up the process.

It’s not artificial padding to make the game more grindy, considering once you’re experienced you can clear castles in a couple runs anyway and buy tons of upgrades every time.

I've definitely noticed labor costs, but I'm also like level 2500 NG+20 so it's obviously going to become a bigger issue this late in the game. Although the labor costs don't offset the fact that you can get over 50 levels with a single full clear of the castle.

i am talking about MUCH earlier, i just beat the 4th boss (when i made this post i was at boss 3)

and at this point tjey are often more than 50% of the whole cost of upgrades, no way you dont notice them...

1
TheHollowBard•

I just don’t really feel what you’re talking about. I usually get like 15-20 upgrades per run. Do you play difficult traits, do you ever reroll for them?

5
[deleted]•

you sure as hell dont get 15 upgrades per run when you only have beaten the third boss yet. i rarely can afford 2...

1
TheHollowBard•

Yeah early game progress should not be that slow. Reducing labor costs is one way to make the difficulty curve kinder, I suppose.

I'm on my very first playthrough and im having this issue too. Im at the 4th area and I just keep grinding that. Sometimes if im doing good with the gold grind I won't attempt the boss and ill go back zone by zone killing everything. Best I have come back with so far is 16k.

Upgrading is ridiculous in this game.

tbh, all roguelite games are like this. you can look into darkest dungeon or curse of the dead god or hades. All of them need 50+ hours grind to be efficient in your runs.

The purpose of these type of games is to slowly build your foundation of your base to improve your character traits. If you remove the labor cost or half it, then you kinda completely missed the purpose of the game, i.e roguelite element to grind to improve yourself and your base and win the game.

you can however just brute force it like some people do it. Just lvl up the basic armor and health and some damage and just go straight for the boss. I've seen ppl do it and it still works.

anyway, if you want more gold ( im getting 40% more gold without any traits ), on the top part of your castle ( base ), there is a upgrade for gold ( 5% each ) called "massive vault" :https://rogue-legacy-2.fandom.com/wiki/Upgrades . You roughly get 30% if you upgrade to full and then 10% from runes. I get roughly 50k gold per run

hades never felt this grindy and slow im progression. not at any point.

Because Hades is built a bit different. You can technically just use the sword and win the game as some speed runners do so

But if you want to make it easier, there are the mirror perk that gives you more health and bonus life and etc. that mirror thing is the exact same thing as rogue legacy castle upgrades.

Additionally the booms from the gods also make the game wayyyy easier, especially Zeus one. RL2, curse of the gods and darkest dungeon doesn’t have those booms benefits

All in all, do what you want to do. I’m 50 hours in and about to beat the 5th boss while I see a streamer takes 8 hrs to beat the entire game. There is nothing wrong with the game upgrades and etc. I’ve seen a video here where someone gotten 1 million gold in a run ( I think it’s NG+ or something )

Exactly, and you can reset the mirror as often as you like and switch back and forth between different stuff... also runs in Hades don't take as long is RL2 and you usually get several upgrades per run.

50 hours is ridiculous for a game like this. I am not interested in NG+ or anything like that at all.

Also if you really really want to win badly, just take barbarian, upgrade your armor, health and critc a bit and just smack the boss.

I won all 4/5 of the bosses with barbarian. HP pool is 700 with a critc on standing ground is OP

1
[deleted]•

Hm, so far Barbarian has been one of my least favorite class (only Gunslinger and Bard come to mind as worse). Maybe I should give Barb a shot again.

Barb has huge HPs

Yeah this is extremely accurate. I don’t think OP has played too many hours. I’m at 10 and still at the third boss lvl 70ish (I’ve played lots of rogue lites) but ik it’s all about learning the mechanics first until the upgrades truly matter. What I’ve learned is this game is one of the most dependent games that require solid mechanics m, but other games like binding of Isaac and hades don’t require as much as you can get run breaking builds. It’s just all a matter of perspective. In OP’s position there’s nothing wrong with adding mods as it’s a single player game and making it just a tad bit easier isn’t wrong if they don’t personally see it as a problem. No one here is going to judge them, but there are some where you can play in an online mode to vs other people and mods aren’t going to help you (binding of Issac).

OP, just download mods, they’re is nothing wrong with that. But know, this game is paced as intended (coming from someone who still hasn’t even gotten to new game +). I’m only saying this as to point out this game is meant to be hard and you’re progressing as the game has built itself to do, as enemies will get harder regardless of what upgrades you have, and you’ll just hit another barrier, but if you’re wanting to experience the post game content right away then there’s nothing wrong with making it easier through mods.

1
waku2x•

Adding mods is fine. I’m usually a purist but if needed I’ll mod it if I find a game mechanic annoying ( like cuphead no health bar bosses )

10 hrs in on 3rd boss is pretty good 👍. Make sure you get the gold upgrade. Helps a lot. Free 30% gold is better than nothing

1
cata85•

Oh my, cup head is the WORST with that, completely forgot. Yeah been putting most of my upgrades into gold gain/health/damage tbh. Thank you for the tips tho :)

waku2x•

One more tip, if you planning to do a full lore run, try to finish within 20hrs. Because to get all the lore, you have to do NG+7 which means you have to fight each boss 35 times+...... its very time consuming and it can burn you out

Im 60 hrs in and I have no mood to do all the lore. its way too time consuming and NG+ didnt give me that much gold yet. I think once it reach NG+5 or something is where the gold starts pouring in.

There are a few upgrades that increase the amount of gold you get:

-One that increases the gold you get for negative traits (down, left of the safe upgrade)

-One that lowers the amount of money you have to give Charon (down, right of the safe)

-One that increasea the amount of money you get in general (very top of the castle, above the armor upgrades)

I recommend you stop trying to spread your castle and focus your points on the first two until you're happy with the amount of money you're making and always pick heirs with traits that give bonus gold. I tried going wide and unlocking everything and always felt I was short on money until I started investing in the gold upgrades.

1
[deleted]•

"One that lowers the amount of money you have to give Charon (down, right of the safe)"

That one seems like total crap to me?! In total I have given Charon 10k gold so far, so even if I had 5 upgrades here (each one reduces the amount you give to Charon by 4%) so that I would have to give 20% less, it would still not have paid the cost of the first upgrade (which is over 2k, dont know the number atm). And that is for ALL runs so far combined and for 5 upgrades of which I can barely afford the first...

The other ones I have upgraded to max already and it still is a complete slog...

1
merklemore•

-One that lowers the amount of money you have to give Charon (down, right of the safe)

To each their own, but I would not invest in living safe upgrades unless it's the only upgrade you can afford. Much better off just spending your gold efficiently on other manor upgrades/armor/runes.

I'm on NG+3 and only now do I sometimes have thousands left over after making purchases at the docks. In NG0 I don't think I ever had to fork over more than a thousand.

Putting away a hundred gold for later vs two or three hundred is nothing compared to the tens of thousands you get on a decent run

LiwetJared•

I think you're supposed to use the teleporters to skip the areas you've already beaten so you can focus on progression. Higher level mobs drop more coins apparently too.

1
[deleted]•

I do, but I am level 140 now and have beaten 4 bosses by now and it's a complete slog. I probably went way too wide on the skill tree but because of the (in my oppinion) terrible "labor cost" system I can't do anything about it. Other games let you reskill for exactly that case. Or they just don't increasy the cost of ALL upgrades at once, so if you skilled terrible you can at least get back to the good upgrades which are still cheap.

As it is it takes me at LEAST 30 minutes per run (more like 1 hour) and then I get ONE upgrade. Whoopdidoo...

1
LiwetJared•

Does it take 30 minutes to beat the fifth boss?

1
[deleted]•

What do you mean? Haven't gotten there yet, but I assume that it will take me much more than 30 minutes.

1
LiwetJared•

Unlock the teleporter to the area you haven't beaten and start your runs from that point. Ignore areas that you've already cleared; it's boring and unprofitable. The new area drops more coins anyways. If your health drops too low and you're like one hit away from death, then go back to an easier area to see if you can regain some of your health.
