This week I took u/ImSpartacus811 's recommendation and headed over to Windchimes in Dublin. Enjoy!
Windchimes on Frantz
4 for $5.50
Filling: 4.5/10
Wrapper: 5/10
Sauce: 9/10
Value: 3/5
Overall: 21.5/35
Filling: These may have the smallest amount of filling out of all the rangoon I have tried. When I could finally get a bite with enough filling to taste, they did taste pretty good. It was a lightly sweet filling that’s pretty rare to find in rangoon. That being said, it wasn’t flavorful enough to carry the rangoon with how little filling there was. These were very thin and not well filled at all. I regularly claim that the triangle rangoon results in less filling, but that’s not an excuse here. I’ve seen triangle ‘goons with way more filling than this. I usually wouldn’t dock a filling this severely just for being underfilled, but there was not even close to enough to make for a good 'goon.
Wrapper: This wrapper was not doing it for me. Aside from being triangle shaped as I mentioned before, the wrappers were pretty oily. The edges were too crispy, and I don’t think they worked very well to elevate the filling - what little of it there was.
Sauce: I didn’t love the filling or the wrapper. That being said, this may be the best rangoon sauce I have ever had. It has a great sweet chili flavor, but still hangs onto the consistency of a classic sweet and sour red sauce. It’s honestly decadent. It has the perfect hint of heat that pairs very well with the sweetness. There’s a lingering acidity that comes in at the end of the bite. It’s a very well balanced sauce and hits all of the flavor profiles that I have come to look for in a good sauce. Absolutely the high point of this rangoon.
Value: Metrics can be found in my data sheet. At $1.37 each, these get a 3.
Overall: Overall, I wouldn’t recommend that you go out of your way for these rangoon. The sauce is immaculate and the filling tastes pretty good, but there isn’t nearly enough filling to showcase the flavor, and the rangoon wrappers are pretty oily. I’m actually pretty bummed because the sauce and filling flavors could have made this a very well ranked rangoon, but as it stands, these aren’t wow-ing me.
