My college marching band's drummer is a testament to the fact that it isn't the size of your kit- it's how you use it.

I've never heard anyone ever say "a bigger kit makes you better" or "he plays a big kit, he must e really good". I mean think about that for a second. Do you think anyone has ever thought that? Maybe a 6 year old watching hair metal in the 80's or something. And so what, the guy in this video can't be good on a big kit? And by the way, Dave Weckl is a fucking drumming god and he can pretty much destroy anyone on any size kit, and his kit is like 4 toms, 2 snares, double bass pedal, bongos, just basically shit everywhere and he uses it almost perfectly in every musical setting. Buddy rich, Marco Minneman, Mike Mangini, Dennis Chambers, Tony Royster, I could go on.
Here's the beautiful thing about music - you can do whatever you want. There are no rules. You can express yourself on your instrument in any way your creative mind desires. I don't care if David Gilmour uses 18 pedals and 100 takes and EQ's Comfortably Numb to death. He still rocked that solo. It's still his creation, no matter how he achieved it. It's still filled with more emotion and soul than almost any other guitar solo.
No one's arguing the latter part of your post, so I won't dispute that. I agree.
I personally see it all the time- "Yo, check out this guy's kit! He's a great drummer!" Or, "My buddy's a wicked drummer, his set is so huge he has to jump into his seat!" My apologies if it isn't a common thing.
Sorry for the rant man, I didn't mean any offense to anyone. I just hear it so much I wish we could move past it. I love seeing a drummer tear it up on any size kit. It just never crosses my mind to weigh size v talent or anything like that.
Edit: year=tear
Nothing to be sorry bout! I agree with you totally.
As a former drummer for ODU's pep band I am greatly pained by admitting that this was totally sick.
It's all good dude! We aren't even rivals anymore, VCU left the CAA. It's just you guys and Mason in the VA rivalry for the CAA.
Haha, did you not hear? We're moving to C-USA next year.
Oh wow, that's awesome. I didn't hear! Yeah, we're A-10, Butler left too. CAA is pretty much crap now lol. Mason and Drexel are the only big ones left.
Yeah it is probably going to fall apart. Wouldn't be surprised if Mason makes an announcement to move on as well.
it's pretty sweet around 2 minutes in when he's grooving on the hi-hat, cowbell, and snare!
I've never seen a contra get down so hard before
i go to this school. they play good music, but a lot of them come off really weird and douchey.
As do many of those non-drummer folk
That's not a marching band. Interesting use of contras though.
Good point. Just because 95% are in the marching band does not mean its a marching band.
Actually, VCU doesn't have a marching band. This is their only athletics band, the Pep Band.
Whoops. TIL.
No worries. I only know this because that school and the one I go to are the only schools in the nation that have a band fraternity but no marching band.
My mistake! Sorry.
Same goes for the band. You're a wall of sound, you are!
dope
You're in VCU's band? W&M bass drummer here, you guys are pretty awesome! We're gonna miss you and ODU in the Pep Band jam next year
I'm not in the band, no. I just go to VCU. Pretty sure I've partied with some of them at some point though :P
Yeah dude those were awesome! W&M is kickass!
That was quite entertaining.
That trumpet player was talented. It wasn't until just now that I realized you can't really move around with a trumpet. You have less mobility than those tubas. Your hands are kind of stuck in the instrument and it's so oddly weighted that you can't swing it around without it coming off your mouth...
They use Contras?! Awesome. Is it VCU that doesn't have a marching band? I go to UCI, and we're the same deal, a pep band but no marching band. I played drums for a year with the pep band, but it was too stressful.
No, we have one. I mislabeled the post.
Edit: nvm, sorry, no we don't! My mistake.
Seriously how the hell can that contra player play moving that?
Wow, are they...... are they grooving?
Marching band with a swing!? **** me!
That drummer did a great job. I one day hope to have his mad chops and groove.
More impressed by the brass line. Mine was shit when I was in high school, well the trumpets were.
Dude.... THIS SO SICK! Lots of talent in this group.
so im in my high school's jazz and concert/pep bands and am about to go to college and, after my high school music career, my feeling was "well, only the jazz band songs were really fun to play, so I think I'm just gonna join a jazz ensemble when I get to school". Fuck that. After watching this, I'm now making it my goal to be the guy behind the kit in the pep band and in whatever other band i can find.
Good luck dude! Just remember to have fun with it.
just out of curiosity, how old is your friend?
Who are you talking about?
the drummer (sorry, i confused this with another thread about someone'e friend)

Tubas got some moves.
That looks tiring as hell, and I play drums.
When the camera turned to the public I was expecting to see that everrybody was dancing like the tuba player
Nope. Dead floor. Whatta shame.
