Landscape-oriented monitor wakes from sleep in portrait orientation
Hello r/techsupport!
I've spent hours searching for this particular problem on the web and haven't been able to find any solutions.
My Dell Monitor was at one point set up in portrait mode. It is not my primary monitor. I did not like that setup, so after a couple of days I powered down my PC and rearranged my monitors into dual landscape configuration, side by side.
Now, when my PC wakes, the Dell monitor is the first to come online. The Windows 10 login screen is briefly shown on this monitor, only it's sideways (as though the monitor was still in portrait mode). After a couple seconds, my LG monitor wakes up and takes over the role of Primary, and the login screen is moved to that monitor in the correct orientation.
After logging in, the Dell monitor behaves normally.
I have done the following steps:
- Rebooted the PC.
- Swapped DisplayPort ports on the Dell monitor.
- Performed a factory reset on the Dell monitor.
- Switched the Dell monitor back to portrait, put the PC to sleep, woke it up, then set it back to Landscape.
- This has been done in both Windows display settings and in the NVidia Control Panel.
- I've also tried other orientations following the same steps.
- Performed a clean install of GeForce Game Ready Driver 512.77
- Curled into a ball on the floor and cried.
My relevant setup information is:
Microsoft Windows 10 Pro v10.0.19044 Build 19044
NVidia RTX 3080 FE running GeForce Game Ready Driver 512.77 from 5/12/22. This also occurred on 512.15.
LG 27GL83A-B monitor, connected via DisplayPort 1.4
Dell P2720DC, connected via DisplayPort 1.2
If there's any other information you may need, please let me know.
Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

For anyone else experiencing this problem, the solution was to delete every folder under the following locations in the registry.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Connectivity
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\ScaleFactors
Once those were deleted, I rebooted, and retested.
I'm not entirely sure what caused this, but I suspect that this monitor was in there at least twice and would be recognized upon wake as one iteration of itself, and then again with the correct settings.
For anyone else trying this solution - don't forget to make a backup of your registry and set a system restore point.
