Ampersand Asian Supper Club

5 for $9

Filling: 7.5/10

Wrapper - 8/10

Sauce: 9/10

Value: 2/5

Overall: 26.5/35

Filling: I was very impressed with the crab flavor in these rangoon. From what I have gathered thus far, the more expensive the rangoon, the more likely it is to have a genuine crab taste, and these are no different. The texture of this filling was different from what I am used to, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing. Generally, rangoon have a cream cheese texture, but this was a filling focused on ingredients themselves. Rather than ingredients paired with cream cheese, it was simply ingredients chopped very small with much less cream cheese than I am used to. I enjoyed it immensely. I wish there had been a stronger garlic flavor, but overall, this is a solid filling.

Wrapper: This wrapper was excellent! It was very light and crispy. It had the texture similar to a spring roll wrapper rather than an egg roll wrapper, and I think it worked really well. It was folded with the butterfly method that made for a really good amount of filling. I wish it had been a little saltier, but I think it was a solid wrapper.

Sauce: I loved this sauce!! It wasn’t like the other sweet and sour sauces I’ve had that can sometimes be too thick and overly sweet. It was a very acidic sauce that complimented the crab flavor of the filling well. There was a hint of sweetness, but it didn’t overpower the very nice sourness of the sauce. It was much lighter than other sauces I have had. A very tasty sauce that paired great with the rangoon and elevated it nicely.

Value: Metrics can be found in my data sheet. At $1.80 each, these get a 2.

Overall: Overall, I think this is an excellent crab rangoon. It has a unique sauce and filling that set it apart from the typical rangoon, and the light spring roll wrapper compliments it well. I wish the filling had a stronger garlic flavor and that there was a saltier flavor in the wrapper, but other than that, I don’t have very many complaints. It’s certainly expensive, but you’re paying for what you get. Great crab flavor, great sauce, great rangoon.
