History is Wheel: The Two Betrayers (Spoilers Extended)
The Two Betrayers
Just a thought I had this morning, in the First Dance of the Dragons, two of the dragonseeds became known as the Two Betrayers due to them switching sides. It could potentially lineup with a few quotes/prophecies and happen again (in a different way).
Archmaester Rigney once wrote that history is a wheel, for the nature of man is fundamentally unchanging. What has happened before will perforce happen again, he said. -AFFC, The Kraken's Daughter

Background
During the First Dance of the Dragons, Rhaenyra's faction (blacks) had more dragons than dragonriders and so numerous dragonseeds (and others) were encouraged to attempt to bond with the unbonded dragons. This led to numerous characters bonding with dragons:
- Ulf the White - Silverwing
- Hugh Hammer - Vermithor
- Addam of Hull - Seasmoke
- Nettles - Sheepstealer
If interested: Nettles: Dragonseed?
With numerous others dying (Steffon Darklyn, Gormon Massey) or getting injured (The Oakenfist) in attempts.
Rhaenyra felt betrayed by all 4, due to:
- Daemon Targaryen's relationship with Nettles (he helped her disappear)
- Ulf/Hugh betrayal at the First Battle of Tumbleton
and so she wanted Addam Hull/Velaryon captured, but instead he and Seasmoke died fighting for her:
When Rhaenyra learned of the betrayal of Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White at First Tumbleton, where they turned their dragons against her forces, her rage was such that she tried to arrest the other dragonseed who had taken dragons at her behest. Among them was Addam Velaryon, but he was forewarned by the Sea Snake, and so escaped.
Young Ser Addam died bravely at the Second Battle of Tumbleton, proving his faithfulness with his life after it had been called into question by the deeds of the Two Betrayers. When his bones were returned to Driftmark from Raventree Hall in 138 AC, the epitaph Lord Alyn put on his tomb consisted of one word: "LOYAL." -TWOIAF, The Targaryen Kings: Aegon II
Theory
Now I don't want to speculate too much on the who in this post, just how the fact that there are "two betrayers" who are dragonriders in the First Dance of Dragons. If we also remember:
- The Dragon has Three Heads
The dragon has three heads. There are two men in the world who I can trust, if I can find them. I will not be alone then. We will be three against the world, like Aegon and his sisters. -ASOS, Daenerys VI
- Three Treasons
. . . three heads has the dragon . . . the ghost chorus yammered inside her skull with never a lip moving, never a breath stirring the still blue air. . . . mother of dragons . . . child of storm . . . The whispers became a swirling song. . . . three fires must you light . . . one for life and one for death and one to love . . . Her own heart was beating in unison to the one that floated before her, blue and corrupt . . . three mounts must you ride . . . one to bed and one to dread and one to love . . . The voices were growing louder, she realized, and it seemed her heart was slowing, and even her breath. . . . three treasons will you know . . . once for blood and once for gold and once for love . . . -ACOK, Daenerys IV
and:
The warlocks whispered of three treasons . . . once for blood and once for gold and once for love. The first traitor was surely Mirri Maz Duur, who had murdered Khal Drogo and their unborn son to avenge her people. Could Pyat Pree and Xaro Xhoan Daxos be the second and the third? She did not think so. What Pyat did was not for gold, and Xaro had never truly loved her. -ACOK, Daenerys V
- Dance of the Dragons
GRRM has mentioned a second dance of the dragons occurring, but that it doesn't necessarily mean Dany's invasion. This fits.
- Bastards Treacherous
If one (or both) of the "betrayers" are thought to be/considered by some (lol) to be bastards this would fit as well:
But now voices on the black council were raised to question Ser Addam’s loyalty. The dragonseeds Ulf White and Hugh Hammer had gone over to the enemy … but were they the only traitors in their midst? What of Addam of Hull and the girl Nettles? They had been born of bastard stock as well. Could they be trusted?
Lord Bartimos Celtigar thought not. “Bastards are treacherous by nature,” he said. “It is in their blood. Betrayal comes as easily to a bastard as loyalty to trueborn men.” -The Princess & the Queen
- Mad Queen
Just because "two betrayers" happens again, doesn't mean that the betrayal was "wrong". If Dany has gone mad queen (like the show) and burned a city, what she might see as a betrayal, would be for the best.
TLDR: Just a thought that popped into my head. We could see a situation where the "Two Betrayers" (dragonriders betraying one side) happens again. This could be one of the "treasons" that Dany faces as well as part of the second Dance of the Dragons.
