Really looking forward to Monica and Carol interacting in “The Marvels”.

One of the more intriguing character moments for Monica in “Wandavision” was her reaction to the mention of Captain Marvel. The emotion on her face at her mention coupled with her brusque change of subject even caused Jimmy and Darcy to exchange a look. A lot was implied in a very quick moment. Clearly, Monica holds some resentment against Carol and I’m really curious how that takes shape in “The Marvels”.

Is she upset that Carol never returned to earth in the intervening 20+ years since the events of her solo movie? Does she feel abandoned by someone she viewed as her “auntie” and role model? Maybe she also assumes that Carol never saw her mother again after the Blip, when she likely really needed support after losing Monica and eventually losing her battle with cancer. I think that could create some really great material for their interactions on screen and allow Brie and Teyonah to play off one another in interesting ways.

My assumption is that Monica and Carol will overcome their conflict during the course of the film. I also think we’re likely to see that Carol did interact with Maria before her death and get a better sense of Carol’s actions during the 5 year gap. But the journey could be interesting if Nia DaCosta executes it well.

Captain Marvel as both film and character remain divisive (I’m a fan and disagree with a lot of the criticisms and narratives that seem to have solidified around her but also acknowledge there was some mishandling). But the potential to get a more fully formed character out of this movie is still there. And it’s also a chance to propel Monica and Kamala to a whole new echelon of visibility and have them play off one another in interesting ways.
