Upgrading from Moto G5 Plus. Is the Moto G Power (2022) a good choice?

Discussion

Hello, my G5 Plus has really started to slow down and now it seems to be freezing up on me so I need to replace it.

I'm looking for a budget unlocked phone that works with Verizon.

A big issue I have with my current G5 is horrible reception, I'm in a more rural area. I have almost no reception in the house, but walk 100ft down the driveway and I have 4GLTE. Not sure if this is an issue with the phone or the signal.

Does the G Power have a notification light? It's a feature that I really miss and would love to have again. I'm not glued to my phone and could really use it when I get an important text.

Any advice would be great!

I live on a farm in a house with aluminized vapour barrier so reception is always a challenge. I tried an Umidigi phone once and it had zero reception in the house, returned it for a G6 that worked okay

I just got a Moto G Power 2021 and can confirm the reception is very good. About 2 dB better than the G6.

And yeah, it apparently is faster than the 2022 model.

Thank you, I'll keep the 2021 model in mind.

The G5 Plus was like a budget phone with specs that would have been flagship a year or two prior. The 2022 G models with the Mediatek processors have been getting poor reviews, unfortunately, and are seen as something of a downgrade from 2021 models, which were seen as a lateral move from 2020 models. They might all technically perform better than your G5 Plus, and have access to newer bands that might help your connectivity issues, but there are probably better options for a little more money. (The 2021 Moto G Stylus 5G was pretty good I think, Pixels might be a better value overall.)

Thanks, but the G Stylus is more than I would like to spend. Also it's so big. I wish they would still make the Droid Mini, I loved that phone.

Of you don't like big, the Moto G Power may not be for you either. Compared to the G6, my G Power feels huge and heavy, the latter I guess because of the battery.

Note that doing a factory reset of your G5 may help your speed problems. It did with my G6. Only reason I replaced it was I broke the screen and the battery was worn out after 3 years and replacing them both was going to cost the same as a new phone.

Sadly none of the G phones seem to have notification LEDs anymore. Don't think I've seen one on any phone in years.

My moto one 5g ace has a notif led but you have to use a custom rom to access it. I think all moto g's have it actually

Does your 5g ace have terrible service in rural areas? I had a 2020 g power and used it dozens of times in a rural area... it wasn't fast, but it was usable for webpages and low quality youtube.

5g ace at the exact same location and it is horrible... forget youtube, can barely get a web page to load in under 30 seconds. constantly doing airplane mode on/off to get fresh connection. It's miserable.

Call/speaker quality is also far worse on the 5g ace compared to my 2020 g power.

As a supercomputer on wifi, the 5g ace is far superior to the 2020 gpower.

as a mobile phone, it is far worse.
