life as a street lamp
i've seen you before
walking 'neath the warm, gentle glow
of my lonesome lamp's light
never questioning why it shines
or for whom it shines for
just a useful amenity for your life
and nothing more.
i do not blame you for this
as i do not have lips to speak
and tell you my struggles
or arms to reach out
to hold and embrace you
for i am a simple street lamp
a silent sentinel of night.
i've stood and watched as lives unfold
of emphatic lovers walking 'neath my beams
of lonesome travelers in need of guiding light
of the sick, the evil
the good and the bad
i've seen life
and i've seen death.
for its my job to light the way
to assist the hundreds that pass me by
to lighten life's darkest roads
to reveal that which cannot be seen
never once expecting thanks
never once expecting attention
only happiness.
but some days i wish to rip away
these electrical roots that hold me down
to tear away this concrete tomb
to run, to walk
to live, to breath
to speak, to sing
to love.
for i know that i am not alone
for i see hundreds of lamps apon this road
hundreds of lamps just like me
and i wish to unearth myself
to settle next to another like me
for the glow of two lights together
makes life brighter for all.
